Two people were killed Monday night in a crash involving a stolen car driving the wrong way on Interstate 95, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Dispatchers learned of the wrong-way car traveling south in the northbound lanes in Island Falls at 9:21 p.m., department spokesperson Shannon Moss said.

Almost 20 minutes later, an East Millinocket police officer found the vehicle near mile marker 248 traveling more than 100 miles per hour, still headed the wrong way.

“The officer turned around and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued at a high rate of speed,” Moss stated. “The officer continued south and began entering the crossover at mile marker 244 to enter the correct flow of traffic.”

The car continued south in the northbound lanes before entering a construction zone in Medway, according to Moss.

Southbound traffic had been diverted to a northbound bridge due to construction. It was there that the car struck a second vehicle head on, according to Moss.

Luis Mendoza, 20, of Indian Township, who was allegedly driving the wrong-way vehicle, was killed, according to Moss.

The driver of the second vehicle, Sandra Lacombe, 67, of Medway, was also killed.

There were no other occupants in either vehicle.

The car Mendoza was allegedly driving, a 2011 Toyota Camry, was reported stolen from a Hannaford in Houlton, according to Moss.

A section of I-95 was closed for several hours following the crash.

State police are investigating the crash.
